How to become a bar tender. Is it stable?

So I will be moving soon to Westwood in the Los Angeles area because the commute to school is getting too crazy. I was thinking of working as a bartender while I complete school. Would being a bartender pull in enough money to live off of? Also what kind of training or certificates might I have to obtain in order to be a bartender. And is a bartending job stable? Thanks!
